Arethusa Falls, New Hampshire

Arethusa Falls

Frankenstein Cliffs in Crawford Notch, NH is known as one of the most diverse and popular ice climbing areas in the northeast. A lesser known area about 1.6 miles from the parking lot off Route 302 is Arethusa Falls. The trail is marked but can be covered by snow at times. The ice wall is about 30 meters high and 40 meters wide, one pitch of WI 3-4. There are steep trails leading up either side of the wall to get to the top, with good tree anchors on each side of the ice wall. It is most similar to the popular “Chia” route at the Frankenstein Cliffs Amphitheater which is 0.6 miles from the parking lot. It is a great overflow area if Frankenstein Cliffs gets too crowded and you don’t mind going the extra mile.
